And in this case, it's especially true. It's been nearly 3 weeks since my last blog-a record lazy stretch. Well, it wasn't so much that I was lazy, I just haven't had opportunity. It's weird how busy I am when I don't have a job. Oh well.
If you are new to my blog, here is a little synopsis of what we're all about. (And by we, I mean my husband, Marc, and I.) On February 15th of this year (2012....duh), we left our lovely town of Moreno Valley, CA to venture out on the road. Our plan is to go to every state in the contiguous United States and tell people about Jesus. We have officially been on the road for just over 6 months. Starting in but not including California, we have been to Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania (but we don't count that because we mostly just passed through), New York, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and finally Rhode Island for a grand total of 22 states. See, I told you it's been too long since I've blogged! The last blog I wrote was ending our time in Maine!!! So now that you're all caught up, I will begin with what happened in New Hampshire.
Not much. Seriously, it was a pretty lame state. No offense if you live there, I don't know who you hang out with, but we couldn't find them! But before I get ahead of myself, here is our first experience in the tiny state of New Hampshire. If you haven't noticed, we take a picture in front of every state sign with a sign that says the day number and the odometer read. Well, New Hampshire's was on a bridge that was under construction and there was no place to pull over, so we were really disappointed that 22 states in, we were going to break our tradition. As we were exiting the freeway, there was another one! Welcome to New Hampshire! Sweet! So we get to the end of the off-ramp, pull over, and run back up the side of the ramp. It was a REALLY long off ramp and I ran the whole way because I didn't want us or the van to get a ticket. So that was that.
Our first whole day in Manchester, NH, we went out and talked to people in the park. Nate was newly released from prison & trying to get his life back together. He believes in God but said that right now he's just living his life for himself. Pray for him! That is why I give you guys such a detailed account-not so you can hear about all of the crazy, ridiculous stories, but so you can pray for the people we talk to.
After that, Marc was talking to this man when two girls came up to us and asked if we wouldn't mind being interviewed for a PBS special. They asked us questions like, "Do you believe the political system is flawed." Heck yes I do! "Do you have hope for the future," and "How would you fix the political system?" It's funny because as a Christian, I believe what the Bible says, which is that man is on this downward spiral of loving self and that the perfect governmental system is a theocracy. Just short of that, George Washington said it rightly when he said, "It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible." (Funny story, he didn't actually say that. Ooooops.) It's funny, I say, because when you're talking to people who don't believe in God, you realize how crazy you sound. Oh well, it's the truth and we have to share it!
After they were done interviewing each of us, Marc asked if we could interview them! So we talked to them for a bit-one of them was a former Catholic who is unsure of what is out there and the other was raised Buddhist, but isn't really anything anymore. That was an interesting conversation-I definitely think seeds were planted with the former Catholic.
Shortly after, we came across these 2 guys sitting outside of the library. One's name was Wlijah and oddly enough he has dreams that are kind of prophetic. It was a really cool conversation-both of them knew that there was a reason that we were there talking to them, like it was ordained by God because of the time in their lives. The guy who had dreams was at the hospital and was telling the doctor about his visions and the doctor was a Christian! She told him about the gifts of the Spirit & the gift of prophecy and gave him some books to read and then a couple days later, we show up! Marc was encouraging him the same way he encourages a lot of "believers" we meet-walk the walk!
On Wednesday, August 1st, we left Manchester & went south to Nashua. We headed to the mall to go to Chick-fil-A. I was really reserved the whole time about that whole feud because I felt like people were backing the wrong cause-our quest in Christianity isn't to prove a company right or to show others that we have a right to practice our religion, it's about furthering the gospel. Then I realized that I don't shop at Wal-Mart, nike, Old Navy, etc. because of their poor ethical treatment of children/employees & their corporate greed, which is a whole other story. But if I'm not shopping somewhere for reasons that appeal to morality, I should shop places that support what I believe, which is why we went, and really, the only reason. Buying a chicken sandwich will not bring others to Jesus. It will give you lunch and lunch will not save anyone from hell. Hear me when I say, if you were crazy about that Chick-fil-A feud and had to eat there to support them, but you hadn't witnessed to anyone in the past week, YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT. And ranting on Facebook doesn't count, I'm talking one-on-one, just like Jesus did.
Okay, rant over.
So we went to go to church that night but when we showed up to Calvary, nobody was there. Their website, door, and voicemail said that there was service on Wednesday night at 7:00, but there was not a soul to be found. So lame. We walked out to the parking lot and just across the way was another church who was having service, but we found out that it had just ended. No luck! The worship team said we could come up and watch them practice, so we did that. While we were there, a woman from the church came up and was telling us that they have a food & clothing pantry & that they serve meals there almost daily. It dawned on me....she thinks I'm homeless! I guess to be quite technical, I am, but apparently I look enough like it that she didn't even have to ask, she just knew it! The worst part, is that I was wearing clothes I wear back home. :( Oh well, so it is.
the stupid sign on the side of the freeway
the interview!
the crazy long line for Chick-fil-A
we waited one hour & 7 minutes
Thursday was pretty non-eventful. We went around the "downtown" area looking for people to talk to. We had a couple surface conversations, nothing too exciting. We walked around the mall again for a little bit, but no good conversation there either, so with no direction & nothing to do, we decided to go to Massachusetts. The drive there literally took about 3 minutes! Just to cross the border anyways. To get to Boston took a couple more hours. We pulled into the city and it was BEAUTIFUL!!!!! I so stinkin love it there! The old brick buildings. The city has so much character because it's so old, but is still really clean for a big city. So we drove around for a little while, seeing what the city had to offer but it was pretty close to night time so we left to go to Walmart.
On Friday morning we got up and went to Calvary Chapel Boston, which really is a misnomer because it's not in Boston at all! It's about 30, maybe 40 minutes south of the city. When we got there, we were talking to the woman in the bookstore about how to take the train into the city and practical things like that. She tried really hard to help us, but didn't really know how. Not her fault, just the luck of the draw, I suppose. So we figured since we were going to have to pay to park our van, then pay to take the train into the city, we might as well just drive and find somewhere to pay to park, since we'd be spending money either way. That was a mistake. If you take one thing from my blog, it's that you should love & follow Jesus, but if you take 2 things, may the second thing be-do NOT drive in the city of Boston. We drove around for almost 4 hours looking for somewhere to park but it was really hard because we had no sense of where to go. We found lots of parking structures but of course, we don't fit in them. We did find a lot that we could park in all day.....for $35. No thanks. All in all, it was a horrible day. We constantly got lost and stuck on freeways/tunnels/bridges that spit us out of the city. We even had to pay a $3.50 toll at one point and we didn't have any cash! We scrounged around for some change really fast!
I couldn't take it anymore-we had sat in so much traffic, driven in circles, and been miserably hot all day, so we abandoned the day and this time went north of the city to Calvary Chapel North Shore. When we got there, we met Pastor Jonah and the church secretary, Amber. They were awesome! They let us take a shower in the church and said we could sleep in the parking lot. Amber (and her friend Kayla) even took us out to dinner! We had pizza and then went to get ice cream from this place where they have cows in the back and actually make the ice cream themselves. it was so cool!
Saturday morning we went to Costco with Amber and did some shopping with her. When that was all done, we found a Goodyear and went to get the alignment done on the van. We got it done right before we left and it was under warranty for a year, so we took it in to the Goodyear in Salem and walked around while they looked at the van. It's so weird how really into witches they are. I'm sure some of it is just for tourists, but there were so many shops there that had pentagrams and things on them. We walked by this graveyard that was a memorial to the Salem Witch Trials, and there was a tour guide in there who was talking about the crossroads of the cemetery being important for spirits or something like that, then he started burning sage. I don't really know why, but that was enough to freak me out even more. I high tailed it out of there with a quickness. It's so weird to me to see the difference between who I am now and who I used to be. Before I was a believer, I loved Halloween and everything about it. I loved all the creepiness and spookiness and the evil aspect of it intrigued me. Now that I follow God, it really creeps me out-evil like that is from the devil but people don't realize it and don't think about it. It's just fun & games to them, but they don't realize how evil it is.
As we were walking around, Goodyear called and said that they couldn't look at the van today-it was making a noise that led them to believe there was a faulty part, in which case the warranty was voided but they'd have to take off the wheels & check it out so we'd have to bring it back the next day.
Sunday was awesome! Apparently, Pastor Matt (head pastor) has ADD and can't teach the same message twice, so he teaches 3 services, each one a different message. How crazy and awesome is that?! It was like, everything I wanted when I first became a believer. I just wanted to sit there all day and learn about God. Not to mention, his accent made everything so much better. Lord was "Lowud", four is "foe-wuh", and so on. Super. Also a cool story-after worship during 3rd service, Marc was asked to play a couple of songs. He played "10,000 Reasons" by Matt Redman and "On Fire" by Switchfoot. It was amazing to see my husband up there, worshiping with his whole heart and leading others into worship. Afterwards, the church had a bbq and then I was duped into going to a women's study that was 2 and a half hours long. Thanks Amber. <----Sarcasm. :) But it wasn't bad, I did learn a cool Bible study trick so that was awesome. Afterwards, Amber & Jin (her husband who is an assistant pastor and also works at Harvard doing research for NASA) had us over for food & to stay the night.
Monday came back around and we took the van back to Goodyear so they could look at it. After about an hour, they gave us our quote: $486.00 to fix it, and we had to fix it because if we didn't, our tires would fall off. Literally. So sucky. Well, we weren't going to pay that much. We almost couldn't, so we left and got on the subway to go to Boston.
We walked around all day and owned that city's face. Seriously. We saw most of the stuff there. It was really cool. When they day was almost done, we were walking through the gardens and there was a guy sitting on a bench so Marc started talking to him. His name is Dane & he & his girlfriend just broke up so he was contemplating life. He does go to church but is still an agnostic & just isn't too sure of committing to Jesus. We talked for a good long time and it was so awesome. At the end, he said that he knew that it wasn't a coincidence that all of these things had been happening in his life and then there we were. I love times like that because you just know that God is using you to do something good. Although, pray for him because I'm not sure about the church he's going to. He wasn't very specific, but I kind of felt like they are one of those churches that has a very loose interpretation of the Bible. So many people think that the Bible isn't relevant to today or it's not for us to follow or it doesn't apply anymore and all too often it is excused as outdated, but God, who is unchanging, gave us His word in it. We are not to simply throw it out because we don't agree with something.
Tuesday was also really non-eventful. We walked around Beverly, the city where we were staying, looking for people to talk to. They were few and far between. Then that evening we went to church for a prayer meeting. And so Tuesday came and went.
On Wednesday we went a few different places in the area trying to scope out people and we ended up back at Richardson's, the ice cream shop with the cows. While watching a cow in labor (we didn't see the birth, just the heaving and uncomfortableness of a pregnant cow), we got to talk to a few people who came and went. One lady said that she's very Indian in the sense of her openness and spirituality, but doesn't believe in one specific thing. There was also an older lady and then later a family from out of state.
By this time, it was time for church, so we headed out. After church we stayed and gave Jin a ride back to his house. When we got there, we all got out of the van and Marc & Jin started evangelizing to this dude who just happened to be walking by the van. I guess you take opportunity wherever it comes!
On Thursday we ended up back in Salem trying to find people to talk to. As we walked around the city, we talked to people here and there. The people were all super friendly until you talked about Jesus. Their whole countenance would change and they just didn't want to hear it. "Yeah yeah yeah, I know" was the typical attitude. It was sad because we were talking to this one lady about what there is to do in the area and what we were doing there. Just small talk and then when that was done, we tried to talk to her about God but she was just not having it. She just said she doesn't want to talk about it, and she wouldn't. Times like that I think make me the most sad because I can't even have hope that a seed was planted. So we talked to a couple more guys after that and then left and called around to a few places to get the van fixed. A friend of Amber's recommended a guy who said he would fix it for $250, so we were really happy about that, but then he never called us back! So we were on the prowl again. We found another place that would do it for $240, but they were almost an hour's drive away, through Boston.
Later that night we went to Pastor Darren's house. His wife, Cookie, made us dinner and it was so good! She is such a sweet woman! It was funny, she told me that she was going to be in a wedding on that Saturday and she was uneasy about it because she felt too old to be a bridesmaid. She felt a lot better after I told her that I was the flower girl in my sister-in-law's wedding two years ago. So dinner was great and the conversation was awesome. We are so blessed that we get to meet such wonderful people all of the time. First we were spoiled by Jin & Amber all week, and then we still get other wonderful opportunities. I don't know how people can say that God is not good.
Friday came and we called more places for a quote, but nobody would give us one. Everyone just told us to bring the van in, so we picked one and went in. We walked around while the guy fixed it and rand into this guy that Marc started talking to. When asked if he believed in God, he said, "Yes, I believe that God put me here to be the next savior of the world." WOW. Just when I thought I had heard it all! He seemed like a paranoid, conspiracy theorist. Marc asked him, "So you think you're the next Jesus?" and he replied, "no, people who think that have a mental problem." So I don't really know what he meant by it, but it was weird nonetheless. As Marc tried to share about the Lord with him, he basically said that he's too worried about the present state of the world & economy to think about heaven and whether or not it is real or a state of mind. The conversation didn't really end well, he just got angry and confrontational and ended up walking away from us. :( Sad.
That night, Jin asked us to share with the high school group at church, so we did. We told them all about the trip, the reality of an eternity in hell, and how important it is to evangelize, even when we're scared to. It was really cool just being able to share our heart and the reason we're out. Hopefully they felt inspired to step out. Something I have always remembered was what my friend Anthony shared with our Bible study years ago-he said that every morning he prays that God would bring him one person to have a good solid conversation with, and every day, He does. So if you're unsure, start there!

On Saturday morning, we did laundry & said good-bye to Massachusetts. Rhode Island here we come!
So we get to Rhode Island and it is TEENY tiny! We stopped at the state house in Providence, but we were 2 minutes too late, so we went on to the city where Calvary is, North Kingstown. It's funny, whenever you ask anyone in Rhode Island where something is, it's always half an hour away. Usually it's never more than that because then you wouldn't be in Rhode Island anymore! It's 1,033.81 square miles, compared to California's 155,779.22 square miles. Crazy difference!
So after we found the church, we didn't have much to do and it was getting late, so we went to Warwick Mall. Not gonna lie, it was pretty small. Don't get me wrong, it was WAY bigger than some malls we have been to, but it wasn't really happening. So we walked outside and Marc talked to this guy, Bill, who was out there. I feel like he was probably one of the ones who thinks he's on the narrow path, but isn't. Not that it's for me to judge, of course, I pray that he is on the narrow, but his speech and demeanor didn't seem to be in line with what pleases God. We talked for a bit, invited him to church, and then left.
Instead of going to Starbucks to work on his video, we decided to try Dunkin Donut's. Let me tell you, back home, their slogan of "America runs on Dunkin'" seems to not make sense. Nobody goes to Dunkin Donuts...nobody. Here in New England area, EVERYONE goes to Dunkin. No joke man. They put other coffee shops out of business. There are more DD's than there are Starbucks. They are in every food court and on every other block. Don't believe me? Sound too ridiculous? Go to their website and look up how many are in Boston. It's RIDICULOUS, and I hope my use of Caps Lock really emphasizes the truth of the matter. So while we were there, this older woman sitting next to us, kept staring at us, so Marc started talking to her. She's a believer, she just seemed like she needed a friend to talk to.
Sunday morning was church at Calvary Chapel Greenmeadow. Afterwards, they had a food fellowship (thank you Jesus! I love food!) that we stayed for. We got to talk to a few people, but nothing really special. After nearly everyone had left, we started talking to this girl, Angelena, who was sitting behind us. It's funny because before to Rhode Island, I was really hoping that we would make good friends. In some states, we meet people and it's just an average experience. They're cool, but we don't really connect. Then in other states, we meet people who we know we'll be friends with for the rest of our lives. These are the types of friends I was praying for! It had been a few states since we had really made them. So when everyone left, we didn't really think we were going to make any friends, but then we started talking and I had hope again!
After church, we went to this place called Goddard Park just to hang out. We read and then I crocheted while Marc practiced his guitar. After a little while, this car drives by & then stops, backs up, and pulls up to us. The guy rolls down his window & says to Marc, "Would you be interested in playing your guitar at an open mic night?"
Marc: "I only play Christian music."
dude: "That's fine."
Marc: "Ok, where?"
dude: "Tavern 12"
And so that's how we were invited to a bar, of all places. It's been so stinking long since I had been in a bar setting! But he took down all of the info & agreed to do it, and that was that. Then we went to Angelena's sister's house for dinner. They (Justin & Nicola) were renovating their house, so Angelena cooked us all dinner while the rest of us painted the living room. I don't know why, but I LOVE painting walls. I know, weird, but it's true! So we painted, then we ate, then we painted some more! Good times.
On Monday morning, we went back to their house to do some more work. Marc weeded the awesome garden while I put a second coat on the walls. That pretty much took all day, so we had dinner, and then went to go watch Justin play softball, where we met Patrick and his 2 awesome boys.
The rest of the week essentially consisted of the same thing. Tuesday we painted & did renovation work. That night was the open mic night that Marc was invited to, so off we went to Tavern 12. I was SO uncomfortable being there, but I didn't want to say how much I hated it or how nervous I was because I didn't want to freak Marc out. He was about to go up in front of a bar full of people and sing songs about Jesus-I think he had much worse reasons to be nervous! So we sat in the van and waited for it to be time. Then it was time! We went inside & Marc went up. He played "On Fire" by Switchfoot, "Consuming Fire/Fuego de Dios" by Christ for the Nations, "True Love" & "Always, Forever" both by Phil Wickham. It was funny because we expected people to notice or be mad or something, but the only response that he got was a little bit of applause from people who probably weren't listening to the words, and that was it. So then we both got the feeling that it was just a test of obedience. Justin had gotten there during the 3rd song, so the 3 of us sat there and ordered an appetizer to share. We figured someone might come say something or come talk to Marc or something, so we didn't want to just leave. Our 1 platter took almost 40 minutes to come out, then after it did, the MC asked Marc to come up and do another set. Wow. So he did! He just did 2 songs, this time they were "Beautiful" by Phil Wickham and "How He Loves" by Jesus Culture. During the last song, a woman went up to him and told him, "Just so you know, I love this song and I respect you for playing it." I'm not too sure what she was doing in a bar, but hopefully the song convicted her!
Wednesday it was back to painting! Although, we did go to the fair that night with the family! It was so fun! We saw these little baby piggies that I automatically fell in love with! We watched the tractor pull, where all of the rednecks bring their tractor out and see who's tractor can pull the weight the farthest. That was really cool and really redneck lol.
At the end of the night we went on this ride called the zipper. I went with this woman we met named Lisa-I wouldn't go on with Marc because he's crazy and would give me a heart attack or make me cry. I thought going with Lisa would be fine because she's this dainty, petite woman-she didn't look like a daredevil at all. Wrong. I was so wrong. We went on and as they're loading people on, she is throwing her body back and forth to tip me over. I was so afraid!! This is a carnival ride, so everything is rusty and looks like it's about to fall apart. It was horrible! Not to mention, by this time, it's raining and there's lightening and we're stuck at the top of the ride. So we're at the highest metal point in the whole fair. Greeeeeat. But we started moving and it was fine and fun and awesome and I stopped hating Lisa. :)
Thursday was once again devoted to the house until that evening when Pastor Rich (Justin's father in law) interviewed Marc and I for his radio show! It was such a cool experience and probably the quickest half hour of my life! Friday afternoon we made it out into the city. We walked up & down and talked to a few different people, but their were 2 good conversations. The first one was with this guy named Charlie who seemed to be angry at God because he spent 20 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. Marc told him that so many peopole get angry at God, but why don't people blame Satan? He has come to steal, kill & destroy, but nobody wants to blame him for anything. The man agreed and I think seeds were planted. Hopefully :)
The other conversation was with this woman named Andrea. We were walking by and she was sitting on a bench so we all started talking. She has studied religion and is open to God, but doesn't believe in anything specific, even though she wants to. So when I asked why doesn't she, she told me that she had had a really hard life and just wasn't sure. I started sharing my testimony with her, which isn't something that I normally do. People who have been hurt don't typically want to hear, "other people have had it bad, too", they just want to be comforted, but I felt led to share, so I did. I told her that growing up, my mother was on drugs and she immediately started nodding. I told her that as a child, I knew that I couldn't trust her, but my heart longed for her. I wanted so badly to hate her, but I just couldn't do it. This illogical part of me still longed for her because she was my mother, even though she never acted like it. It was cool because Andrea was nodding the whole time in agreement and half of the time she would finish my sentence, like she had gone through the same thing. She even got choked up and almost cried. It was amazing to see her heart being touched like that.
Later that day, we went to the church picnic at this park called Beavertail. The beach was gorgeous! We played on the rocks and hung out with different people. Then Marc, Angelena, and I headed out to watch Justin play softball. And that was Friday!
Saturday was a funny combination of interesting and awesome! We left where we were & drove about half an hour to Providence, where we went to the statehouse to take the tour. Apparently, it just wasn't meant to be because it's closed on the weekends! They're never closed on the weekends! Oh well. So it was raining and I was pretty much soaked and I was really grumpy because we couldn't find anywhere to park and we were going to have to be far away and walk in the rain and blah blah blah, but I got over it. We did end up parking a good ways away, but not terrible, so our next stop was the mall. As we walked, we passed a few people who, I think thought we had the plague lol but one guy did stop to talk and he ended up accepting Jesus! YEAH! Pray for him, his name is Anderson.
So into the mall, which was much better than the Warwick mall. By this time, it had stopped raining, praise the Lord! We pretty much spent all day walking around the city, stopping people here and there. One interesting thing that happened-Marc stopped to talk to these 4 guys, so I went and sat on a bench. I have found that boys talk easier to boys when there is not a girl around, so I watched from the next bench over. All of the guys were seriously visibly high. One of them, more so-like mouth hanging open, barely speaking, spacing out. After a few minutes, the cops come and start busting them. Great. Luckily, they kicked Marc out so we got out of there pretty quickly.
We also talked to this woman named Randi who was homeless. We got her a burger and asked her if she knew Jesus, so she said that He was her Lord and Savior, then quoted John 3:16! Sweet! Then there was another homeless guy shortly down the road who seemed to have argument after argument after argument and didn't really seem to want to believe.
We also talked to these 2 girls in some random shop. It was weird because the one who was really talking knew the value of faith and belief in God and sounded like she believed in Him, but was cursing up a storm. It reminded me of how I used to be, going to church every Sunday, even if I was hungover. People that I worked with would always say, "You go to church?!" and I would get mad because I didn't understand why it was so unbelievable. Then I would cuss them out. They knew what it was supposed to mean to be a Christian, but I was so blinded. I thought that because I went to church & read my Bible, I was ok, but there was no truth in me, I had no relationship with Jesus. There was belief, but no actions, no reflection of Jesus in my life.
On the way back to the river to meet up with Justin and Lisa's husband, Alex, we started talking to these 2 guys who kinda but not really believed in God. By the end of the conversation, the one of them had went from being agnostic, to admitting that every point that Marc made was valid. He said, "but it probably won't change my mind," so Marc asked why not and he jokingly said because he was stubborn, but who knows what would happen. It was a really good convo!
So we met up with Justin and Alex and walked around the river. On occasion they do this thing called "Water Fire" where they light a bunch of fires on the river. Vendors set up tents and there are things to do & places to eat, and you walk up & down the river looking at fire. It's pretty awesome looking, but also a little bit eerie & new agey. After a few more convos here and there, Justin & Alex headed home and we met up with Angelena & her roomie, Leah. So we walked around some more and eventually made it to this food trailer called Haven Bro's that was on Man vs. Food, where I was introduced to coffee milk which is like chocolate milk, but with coffee instead. BOMB. By this time it was like 10:30 and Marc & I had been walking around for like 6 or 7 hours, so it was definitely bed time!
Sunday was church again where Pastor Rich put us on the spot and had us share for a minute or two about the trip. It was weird because this one lady was like, "Hey! I heard you on the radio!" Afterwards, we did laundry, ate lunch, played Bananagrams, and said goodbye to our new, life long friends then headed out!
Stay tuned for Connecticut!
